PEACEFUL BEDTIMES / FASTER HEALING.... Start tonight!!

* Rainbows and Sunshine (ages 6 to 11)

About Rainbows and Sunshine

Rainbows and Sunshine has two peaceful narratives designed to help children relax, heal, and fall asleep. These narratives were developed with the help of hospital pediatricians and child psychologists to help children cope with medical procedures, hospital stays, and everyday stress; and to help activate the body's natural healing process. Each narrative features different music and mind-body techniques to appeal to a wider audience.

Rainbows is an enchanting bedtime story in which the child drifts on a cloud, visits a rainbow, and relaxes in a cocoon of healing light. This story includes proven, age- appropriate, guided imagery/relaxation exercises, beautiful guitar and string music, and enchanting songs about nature. Children relax with positive, happy thoughts in their minds while practicing relaxation techniques they can use all their lives.

Sunshine is a calming narrative in which children are gently led through age-appropriate relaxation and healing exercises. This narrative is beautifully orchestrated with strings, flutes, and waves.

The optimum relaxation tempo

The compositions in both pieces were recorded at the tempo that has been proven to be the most effective at evoking the relaxation response through a scientific phenomenon known as 'rhythm entrainment.'

Holy Smoke!

Holy Smoke!Aussie director Jane Campion's one of a kind. Forget money and fame; she's inspired by the pleasure of sharing her cinematic dreams with friends and film audiences. Her globetrotting heroines (Angel at My Table, The Piano, Portrait of a Lady) may be willful, crazed, self-absorbed, wrong--but who can resist joining these passionate women on their voyages of self-discovery, whether they lead to safe harbor or dead end?

Holy Smoke opens deliriously in a magical India, saturated with light, color, sensuality. Celebrated by Neil Diamond's anthem, "Holly Holy," Ruth Baron (Kate Winslet, delivering a breathtakingly luminous performance) explores a world that encourages spiritual epiphany--and falls hard for the cartoonish guru who opens her "third eye." Back home in Australia, her hilariously dysfunctional, distinctly down-to-earth family hires hotshot deprogrammer PJ Waters (Harvey Keitel, his dyed hair and cowboy boots telegraphing desperate machismo) to cure Ruth. In an isolated Outback shack, Campion's duo wrestle each other for control of their souls--and bodies, too. This duel's in deadly earnest: Ruth assaults Waters's petrified masculinity; PJ aims to strip this radiant girl of her unexamined faith.

Their wild ride--funny, brutal, erotic--toward brand-new selfhood is punctuated by indelible images: Ruth dancing in a white sari beside an emu corral; naked in the night, Ruth offering her lush body to her tormentor; lost in the desert, cross-dressed in red gown, PJ "saved" by a golden vision of Ruth as a magnificent Indian goddess. For those who love the way movies can sometimes project truth and beauty, Holy Smoke is a feast for the eyes--and for the mind. --Kathleen Murphy

7 Steps To Control Childhood Asthma

Asthma is the most common chronic (long-term) childhood disease. In America about nine million children are diagnosed with asthma. Up to ten per cent of children in Europe are also suffering from asthma symptoms. Unfortunately parents of these children are often uninformed about the various ways to control childhood asthma.

If you suspect your child has asthma the first priority is correct diagnosis. However, be aware that symptoms can vary from episode to episode and not all wheezing and coughing is caused by asthma. Asthma-like symptoms in children younger than five are usually due to a virus or bacterial infection of the airways. However if your child is experiencing breathing difficulties it is best to get them to a doctor whatever the cause.

About eighty per cent of children who develop asthma do so before the age of five. Studies show that children living in rural areas have lower rates of asthma than those who live in cities, particularly if they spent their first five years in a rural area. For children living in inner cities the cockroach allergen seems to worsen asthma symptoms more than dust mite or pet allergens. Therefore another important step in the control of your child's asthma is to ensure that general cleaning and maintenance routines are followed to ensure cockroaches are not encouraged into the home. Levels of cockroach allergens have been found to be highest in high-rise apartments.

Another factor that has been linked to the development of asthma in children is exposure to smoke. A study in Norway showed that almost ten per cent of adult asthma patients had experienced passive smoking during early childhood. Therefore another step to take at home is to ensure that your child is not exposed to tobacco smoke.

If your doctor recommends the use of medication the next step is to encourage your child to take the medicine. Asthma is one of the main causes for emergency room visits by children. Yet studies have shown that up to half of these hospitalizations may be preventable if children, particularly teenagers, followed their medication schedule correctly, avoided their asthma triggers and made regular visits to the doctor.

Perhaps fear of side effects or dependency, or an impression that it is uncool to be seen taking medicines is preventing children taking their medication as regularly as they should. Perhaps intermittent asthma symptoms persuade children and their parents that it is not important to take medication if there are no symptoms. This is a mistake. Even when there are no obvious symptoms an asthmatic's lungs will be inflamed to some degree.

The fact that the condition seems to run in families with a history of asthma or allergies suggests that certain people are born with a predisposition to asthma. Some may believe you are born with the condition and there is nothing you can do. However a child's environment can also play an important role. Studies have found that exposure to potential allergens like pets and pollen in the first six months of life may reduce the chance of developing asthma later. However exposure beyond six months of age has the opposite effect. Being born into a family that already has siblings also seems to reduce the chance of developing asthma.

It is known that children are more susceptible to viral and allergic triggers than adults. An important step in controlling your child's asthma is identifying the triggers and teaching your child how to recognize their asthma triggers and avoid them. One possible trigger is ibuprofen, with over 100,000 children susceptible to asthma symptoms brought on by the drug.

Children tend to spend more time outside during the summer vacation. If pollen or high levels of ozone trigger your child's asthma you need to monitor these. Physical exercise is a common trigger of childhood asthma. Teach your child to take medication if necessary, and do warm up exercises before strenuous activity and wind down exercises after.

If your child is going away to camp during the vacation make sure those in charge are aware of your child's asthma management and action plans. There are camps designed specifically for asthma sufferers in the U.S. and Canada.

It is essential to have a written action plan that clearly states what medication to take and when, as well as how to respond to an asthma attack. You or your child may not remember what to do at a time when it may be difficult for them to breathe, so it is essential to have the important details in writing.

It is important you and your child remain calm during an attack as panic can produce more breathing difficulties. A parent's instinct may be to cuddle their child, but that would constrict the chest further.

If asthma is diagnosed your next step is to inform your child's school. Every school should allow access to asthma medication and some allow children to carry and self-administer their asthma medication if certain requirements are met.

Whilst we're talking about schools here's one often overlooked childhood asthma trigger. School buses are major sources of pollution, and studies show children who ride them are exposed to five to fifteen times as much asthma triggering particulates inside the buses compared to outside. New Jersey recently passed a law requiring retrofitting of school buses and municipal vehicles to clean up tailpipe emissions. Is your state doing the same?

Remember, if asthma is confirmed you need to educate yourself. According to the experts knowledge is the best prescription. To stop the disease affecting your child's life you need to know how to monitor and manage asthma. This will mean knowing how to use medications correctly, whether your child's attacks are triggered by allergens and if so how to reduce exposure to them, and the lifestyle changes that will help your child prevent attacks.

Despite being a widespread disease there are still plenty of myths about asthma. One of the most damaging of these for children is the belief that the condition will improve every seven years or can even disappear completely. Unfortunately, any apparent improvement is probably due to hormonal changes as the child's immune system matures. The underlying condition does not go away and not managing it can lead to long-term lung damage.

Asthma Facts - Types Of Asthma and Causes

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder and is very prevalent in almost all parts of the world. There are mainly two different kinds of asthma. Sometimes there are symptoms that resemble asthma but do not actually qualify to be the full blown disease. This brings us to the need of understanding asthma thoroughly as a disease so that proper prevention and cure can then be practiced.

Asthma is generally broadly classified to be of two types. These are the categories of bronchial asthma and the categorization is based on the simple criteria of the predominant factors that cause the disease. These two types are:

Extrinsic Asthma: Extrinsic asthma is classified as that form of asthma which develops when the people prone to it are exposed to surroundings containing various allergens. Generally these people do not show any symptoms and appear to be perfectly healthy but upon exposure to an allergen that has the potency to develop symptoms in them they can develop the symptoms of asthma very quickly.

The symptoms thus manifested can range from mild to chronic depending upon the reaction of the body towards the allergen. The people who generally develop asthma this way show a tendency towards other allergies and infections also like eczema. If tested it is seen that such people generally show allergic reactions to one or more than one allergens. These allergens can be of any kind. They can be food allergens or dust or animal dander or smoke or pollutants of any other kind.

It is important to understand that the people who are usually prone to this kind of asthma may have been suffering from recurrent mild to severe bouts of cold, cough and repeated sneezing. This happens generally because the respiratory tract becomes weakened with every such bout of cold and since the person is already prone to allergies, chances of his system contacting asthma become very high. This is also a type of asthma that is very prevalent in younger stages in life especially in smaller kids who get exposed to atmospheric pollutants a lot.

In the third world countries the situation is very bleak for patients showing tendencies of extrinsic asthma. This is because the laws controlling the effect of pollutants from various factories and developmental outlets are very poor and most of the time they are constantly flouted. So the tendency of extrinsic asthma can be really called as a developmental or lifestyle disease.

It is also seen that many of the patients who show tendencies of this type of asthma may continue to be prone to various allergies even in later stages of life. Sometimes allergy triggered off by one kind of allergen can be easily translated into a full blown asthmatic attack also.

Sometimes allergies caused by allergens may lead to asthma like symptoms but they do not qualify as full blown cases of asthma. Allergies are very difficult to detect because of the variety of allergens as well as the variety of reactions shown by the patients towards each. But careful analysis by a qualified doctor can lead to proper judgement in the detection of asthma.

Normally most cases of extrinsic asthma may benefit tremendously with anti-allergic treatments of different types. This is because the disease is mainly caused due to the allergen triggers and gets suppressed with adequate suppression of the allergen. But once the allergen is identified or even suspected the patients must take care in not exposing themselves to it to the extent possible.

Intrinsic Asthma: This type of asthma is generally not a resultant of allergic reaction to any kind of allergens. This may occur generally in the later stages of life. The disease may take full blown proportions and may manifest all of a sudden. This means that the disease has a way of attacking the people who do not have any known history of similar or even remotely similar disorders. This also applies to not having any genetic history of the disease. These facts make it very difficult for the patient as well as the doctor as the patient's psychological acceptance of any disease is of prime importance in any treatment. Since this disease is not triggered by allergens, these patients do not respond to the anti-allergic treatments of any kind.

Intrinsic asthma normally occurs due to some disease of the lung that may have existed for a long time but may not have been detected. Sometimes it is seen that the patients suffering from some kind of bronchial infection in the early stages of life develop intrinsic asthma all of a sudden after many years of the infection being cured and without any manifestation of any kind of symptoms of recurrence of the infection. This only goes to show that the lung infections need to be detected and treated properly and should never be neglected.

Also the people who have had any kind of lung disorder should take extra care and get themselves checked from time to time. Such people should also take care to get the condition of asthma ruled out properly if they ever find themselves in situations where even mild symptoms of asthma are visible in their systems.

Do You Have Asthma? Part 1

An international report released in 2004 said that up to an amazing 20 per cent of New Zealanders suffer from asthma. In that same year, one in five New Zealand children were diagnosed with asthma; but for Maori children (New Zealand's indigenous child), the figure was in one in three. NZ has three times the global rate, and did you know that Australia and NZ have more asthma sufferers per capita than any other countries in the world?

I have wanted to write on asthma for some time now and share my views on this common diagnosis. Unfortunately there are still quite a few people out there with the belief that people with asthma are "breathing impaired" and can't really go anywhere without their inhaler. With a positive change in an asthmatic's lifestyle, environment and diet, an improvement in their immunity and digestion along with a few simple techniques to assist breathing and relaxation, most asthmatics can dramatically reduce their need and physical dependence on all their prescribed drugs. I can assure you, after seeing many asthmatics over time as patients it has been a pleasure to see many improve with plenty of encouragement and explain that they are not necessarily dependent all their life on medications. Let's explore asthma over a two part series and look at conventional treatments and see what recommendations we can make with regards to improving this condition with natural medicine. I'll give you a few case studies along the way.

Conventional medicine has not coped well at all with asthma in the 21st century. The number and availability of drugs to treat the disease have been sharply increasing along with the incidence of asthma. I could not help wishing that there was another way of helping a child control his or her asthma, instead of having to fall back on "puffers" which they have been prescribed. Unfortunately, asthma is one of those health problems not unlike heart disease, which often strikes fear and anxiety with the person who has been medically diagnosed with it, or their caregivers. And because these conditions are often driven by fear, the patient will carry their puffer believing that they are the victim afflicted with a terrible disease and need to continually rely on their drugs. Whilst it is true that a few people may actually die of a severe and acute asthma attack, the reality is this very rarely occurs and most asthmatics, (in spite of what they have been told) can dramatically reduce their dependency on puffers, both bronchodilators and the "preventatives". I never use the "cure" word, but have seen more than a few asthmatics discontinue drugs entirely as their overall health improves.

And, the more they reduce their reliance of drugs and gain confidence with breathing and living naturally, the stronger their lung function will become. Over time, many hardly need to rely on medications except in conditions perhaps like mid winter with house fires burning, extreme humidity or for example strenuous exercise in a severe case. In time, even the most anxiety prone asthmatic can learn to become a very confident individual. "The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest patients in the care of the human frame, diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease". Isn't that great? It was written by the inventor of the light bulb, Thomas Edison. Here's my asthma version, and how it relates to asthma "The doctor of the future will give no puffers, but interest his or her patient in how to breathe properly, how to look after their body by encouraging a fresh & healthy diet, how to reduce their load of allergenic foods, avoiding junk foods, as well as helping to strengthen their immunity and not to weaken it with "anti" drugs but give herbs and nutrients instead, improve their bowel flora, encourage exercise and relaxation techniques, etc". How can this all be achieved in a six minute visit in the medical clinic? This is particularly indicated for our little Maori asthmatics, who rank amongst the highest rate in the world. This is why chronic disease conditions like asthma are best tackled as a team approach treatment plan, whereby the doctor works alongside natural health care professionals. Asthmatics that only go every now and then for top ups of their puffers at medical centers are totally missing the boat, they need education and not drugs. I have not yet met a patient who cannot improve his or her lung function significantly, but I have met plenty of adults who were so gripped with fear that they carry a puffer in their pocket, handbag and possibly also in the glove box of their car and use it at the very first sign of any breathing discomfort, in case they have "an attack". It is important to remember that asthma is one condition driven by fear.

Have you noticed how TV drug advertisements encourage puffer use? All you have to do is turn off the television and keep it off and you will have an enormous blanket of protection from drug companies. Marketing works, there is no question about it, and drug companies spent over 2.5 billion US dollars globally last year to convince you to take their potions. This kind of money wasting even leaves me gasping for breath!

Internal and external environmental causes

Most asthma sufferers will take medicine daily in the form of an asthma "preventative" inhaler, as well as a bronchodilator spray, designed to open their airways easier. Little attention is generally paid to the cause and there is more emphasis on symptomatic treatment. Having a closer look at what makes an asthmatic better or worse will give you some valuable clues in helping to establish the cause in a person. It makes sense, that if you can establish a cause then you should be able to improve that person simply by modifying or even better by removing it, if possible. Is their asthma made worse by environmental triggers such as pollens, cold air, cat or horse fur, dust mites (use a powerful vacuum cleaner) or perhaps an emotional trigger? Do they have any other immune problems associated such as food allergies, recurring ear, nose or throat or chest problems? Careful history taking will be most important to establish the most likely asthma triggers. You will find that certain triggers (probable causes) will be more particular to some people than others. Does their asthma occur mostly indoors or outdoors?

Emotional stress induces an asthma attack directly by converting that thought you have of somebody not nice to a nervous impulse which can release a hormone called adrenalin. Adrenalin is produced by the adrenal gland and is one of the most powerful hormones your body makes is released in response to any stress. It sets to work immediately by way of increasing the heart rate and breathing rate. As the stress continues but becomes low grade and continual over time, another adrenal hormone called cortisol begins to adversely affect the body. The immune system now becomes less effective and fatigue develops with chest infections become more common place. This is when antibiotics come into the picture, making the person weaker and even more reliant on medications.

I'm sure more than one asthma attack was caused by an argumentative family member coming over at Christmas or birthdays. I have a Jewish Aunty living in Holland who manages to have her son hyper-ventilate on his wedding day due to her snide remarks about the bride, after she helped herself to several glasses of champagne. Many of us will know of a particular family member or friend who seems to have the uncanny knack to bring out the worst in somebody or who can really get on your nerves at times. Is their asthma worse indoors, are they worse at home or at work? I can remember an 18 yr old delicatessen assistant with chronic asthma coming to see me. She worked in a major supermarket in and told me that her "asthma" was particularly bad first thing in the morning, but improved considerably as the day progressed. With some detective work I found out that there were several pesticide cans in her working environment which appeared at night from behind screens and were automatically programmed to spray short bursts of pesticides every few minutes. You never see any bugs in a supermarket, do you? They were switched off just before opening time, not long before she started to work. Her "asthma" had initially dramatically improved and has now entirely disappeared since she left to work elsewhere.

Is the person is worse during a particular season, then suspect pollens. Look at when those antihistamine commercials appear on television, which will give you a good clue as they seem to target their marketing around peak pollen (spring) times. An important point is to always be on the lookout for any food allergies, and you will see why later, because the more severe the asthma, the more likely that a highly allergic food in the person's diet may well be underpinning the asthma and itself is likely to be one of the primary triggers. By removing the offending food the person's immunity improves and so does their asthma. Many asthma cases I have seen on occasions have been brought on by emotional states, and here are three examples.

Asthma with an emotional component

A 38yr old builder I saw years ago as a patient was taking up to 20 puffs a day on his bronchodilator. He had asthma as a child which he grew out of, but his asthma now was brought on after he separated from his wife and daughter. His breathing, cough and wheeze was particularly bad on the job and a lot worse in winter with the cold early morning starts. He smoked about 5 cigarettes a day and was continually developing sore throats and chest infections. Is it any wonder? A combination of smoking cigarettes and puffers would really irritate the delicate respiratory tract. I finally persuaded Gary to quit with the help of a hypnotherapist and we got him into a healthy eating regime and I also took him along to a Toastmasters meeting one evening which has boosted his flagging self-esteem and got him out and in front of people after his separation. I saw Gary at a local swimming pool this summer and he has not had one puff of any drug or cigarette for over two years and told me quite excited that he could now go for early morning runs when previously he had difficulty even climbing a ladder. His self esteem is great and he has a new lady friend too. About five years ago I saw a nine year old boy who only developed a cough and wheeze when he was at his father's house each weekend, but when he stayed with his mother he was fine. Homeopathy helped significantly and offered prompt relief for a sensitive boy with emotional induced breathing difficulties.

Another case was of an elderly woman who developed asthma suddenly after her husband passed away. Glenys was too frail to stay at home and was consequently moved into a retirement village by her highly irritated daughter, who going through menopause and a messy divorce herself. Once 78yr old Glenys became more involved with committee work at the retirement village, her asthma eased off. Glenys is a very social person and felt depressed and alienated when she was first placed from her family home of more than fifty years to the retirement village. Once she became occupied with other people, her asthma which also drew attention from others no longer served a purpose. A good approach with asthma is to always look at the emotional as well as environmental stimuli that set off a response from the person's super sensitive airways. There are many drug-free ways to help a person who suffers from grief, shock, stress, or a range of emotions which can affect the breathing response. A natural medicine practitioner is a bit like a detective, a case well taken is a case half solved. If you have asthma, then what are your triggers, have you worked any of them out yet?

Environmental exposure

More than 200 different occupational asthma triggers are documented in the medical literature.Think about the adverse effects of active or passive tobacco smoke, it is also advisable for certain cases to avoid dust or fumes of chemicals, paints or sprays, exposures to people who have respiratory infections, very cold air or sudden changes in air temperatures, known inhalant allergens such as cats or dogs, grasses or pollens. The concept of total body burden of toxic and allergy factors is important here, and to prevent and treat asthma attacks, the goal is to reduce exposure to toxic and allergenic substances as much as possible to lower the total body burden. Heavy metals and spray residues, food additives and common household chemicals such as cleaners add to this burden. Isn't that spray type oven cleaner is a real beauty, it makes me wheeze just thinking about it. You can now begin to see that the asthmatic needs an approach which ideally addresses many more factors than conventional medicine alone can offer.

Pharmaceutical drugs such as the beta blockers, ace inhibitors, aspirin and certain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are linked as asthma triggers as well. Once allergens (any immune triggers) have been identified, measures recommended are minimising exposure to them and keeping indoor humidity levels between 40% - 50 %, as well as reducing pollen and mould exposure. Those new fan dangled home ventilation systems are fabulous for the asthmatic. For the bad asthma cases, it is probably best to entirely eliminate carpeting and upholstery when possible and using plastic pillow and mattress casings which will really help to keep dust exposure to a minimum. Watch out for dust mites, and have the bedding which you can't wash professionally laundered. Wooden floorboards are best, and rugs can be taken out regularly and cleaned. Adding a teaspoon of kerosene to the bucket of water you clean the floorboards with will keep dust mites at bay and make the floor clean and shiny, an old trick I learned from a Aussie doctor who swore by this method.

Food allergy link to asthma

Scientists have found a link between food allergies and asthma attacks in children. It's the first time doctors have been able to highlight the important relationship between allergy and severe asthma. British research was published in the July 2008 edition of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Scientists at St Mary's Hospital in London compared two groups of children, one with severe asthma, the other with mild symptoms. More than 50% of the children with life-threatening asthma had food allergies, especially to peanuts. Only 10% in the group with mild asthma had food allergies, raising the questions of whether "life-threatening" asthma attacks may actually be triggered by the food allergies rather than by the actual asthma itself. Naturopaths have found for many years that when you take the most allergic foods from an asthmatic child's diet they improve considerably. Cow's milk would top the allergenic food list, along with other foods such as wheat, oranges and peanuts. Get must get your asthmatic child to stop peanut butter, chocolate, ice creams and bananas at once to see if there is any link, and gradually to re-introduce the foods one by one to find any likely culprits. On a personal note, if I had believed the diagnosis when my son was three years old many years ago, I probably would have had him on asthma medication for years actually believing that he had asthma, when in fact he was intolerant to cow's milk. After we removed milk from his diet, his wheeze cleared up entirely, so did his earaches and Joshua has never used a puffer in spite of the GP's recommendations for him to do so. I figured out early on that he had allergic tendencies when he suffered a major reaction to a bee sting at just eighteen months of age.

Antibiotics, bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory drugs

The main medications to treat both acute and chronic asthma are classified basically into three categories, the bronchodilators and the anti-inflammatory agents and antibiotics. For severe attacks, drugs may be administered in the medical clinic or hospital by way of a nebuliser which causes a fog or mist of medications you inhale and are able to then absorb rapidly. The frequency is reduced as soon as possible, and the patient is switched to the metered dose inhaler. Outside of the hospital the medications are used as necessary, preferably only one or two puffs of the bronchodilator daily and a puff or two of the preventative once to twice daily. Inhalers may also be used prior to exercise to prevent an exercise induced asthmatic attack. Some studies have shown that frequent over use of the bronchodilators may result in an overall worsening of the asthma condition. This effect and the adverse effects on the cardiovascular system may explain in part the increasing death rate from asthma during the past several years. In other words, increasing mortality from asthma may be partially drug induced, or doctor caused.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are prescribed when an asthmatic gets an infection of the respiratory system, which they are prone to. An asthma attack may even be induced by a bacterial infection. In such a case, an antibiotic will almost always certainly be prescribed, which will be deemed helpful in clearing up the infection. The problem is that antibiotics weaken an already weak immune system of the asthmatic, and destroy many beneficial bacteria in the bowel which helpto increase the body's resistance against food allergies in the first place. You will never achieve optimal health be recurringly taking antibiotics so think again if you have to go back several times a year to your doctor with a chest infection. Ask yourself why, it may even be the puffers you are using daily which are irritate your throat region, encouraging an infection as well as causing you to cough, in addition to creating other side effects. If you habitually rely on a bronchodilator and a preventative you are setting yourself up literally for an inevitable infection conveniently requiring an antibiotic. And so the drug merry-go-round continues. See your naturopath or herbalist for herbs or nutrients to boost your immunity, there are many options. Only take antibiotics for severe chest infections, and then I only recommend them for pneumonia or the very compromised of all patients. The less anti drugs you take, the stronger your immunity will become, and don't forget to take beneficial bacteria (pro biotics such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, after your antibiotics at the rate of one capsule twice daily away from meals for a few months.

Bronchodilators

There are three basic types of bronchodilators, but for brevity sake will look at the most popular one. One of the most commonly used drugs in asthma is Ventolin(TM), a "beta 2- adrenergic antagonistic" bronchodilator which is administered by a metered dose inhaler, otherwise commonly known as a "puffer" The smooth muscles cells of the airways contain receptors that are known as beta 2-adrenergic receptors. Adrenaline, the "fight or flight" hormone secreted by the adrenal gland when the body is under a stress, stimulates this type of lung cell receptor to constrict the bronchi, making breathing difficult. Ventolin(TM) causes the smooth muscles of the bronchi to dilate, thereby allowing the asthmatic to breathe more easily. Does it not make sense to identify and reduce the stress in the first instance rather than target the effects of stress in the lungs and counter it with a "stress antagonistic drug" on a daily basis? Although the product literature states that "up to 12 puffs a day" of a bronchodilator may be used, patients with mild asthma should need these drugs only 3 or 4 times a week at the very most. A pattern of regular or increasing use approaching 8 to 12 puffs a day reflects poor asthma control and warrants immediate re-evaluation. Although these beta 2-adrenergic agonists are reported to be safe, they do stimulate the nervous system and may produce rapid or irregular heartbeat, insomnia, shakiness and nervousness, a cough or a dry mouth and throat.

Wrong diagnosis: Back to basics

Jill had been diagnosed as asthmatic over 10 years ago. She loved to sing but gave up because she was not able to exhale properly, and her GP diagnosed asthma. It appeared that the side effects of her bronchodilator included a chronic cough and recurring throat irritation and infections, something I have commonly seen with those on long term puffers. I decided that it was about time she returned to her Doctor for a re-assessment regarding her asthma, after an iridology session picked up on something unusual with the right side of her spine. It was the best outcome possible because it was in fact proved that she was not asthmatic as previously diagnosed many years ago.

A chest X-ray revealed that everything was normal with no associated problems, so I sent her to an chiropractic colleague who I consider an expert. This was the first time in years that any health professional had thought to inspect her rib cage. The chiropractor was astonished to discover that the right side of her rib cage was the problem of her breathing difficulty and duly re-aligned it for her. Jill could recall that at some stage during her youth she had suffered a bicycle accident and even had surgery on a rib when she was twelve. In addition, I recommended a voice coach, and the good news is that her voice production and breathing pattern have improved significantly after the rib re-alignment as she continues to work on her exhalation with controlled diaphragm breathing. Jill is now fine, and what a relief to her not having to rely on drugs when she did not need them. Did you have a fall for example from a horse or have car accident shortly before or long before your diagnosis? You may not have "asthma" at all, but a structural problem which can be remedied by a good chiropractor or osteopath, thank goodness we have many fantastic musculoskeletal practitioners in NZ and they are worth a visit if you cannot get joy with your breathing or feel something is "stuck" when you take a breath. I have found that a person's ribs can be real a problem with breathing, and the last thing to be checked out with asthma. I know this skeletal link to be a fact because my own second and third thoracic vertebrae in my back were displaced after a motorcycle accident about twenty years ago, and I couldn't quite catch my breath for over a year. A series of adjustments by a chiropractor and it was all sorted; I never thought at the time that my back could cause a breathing problem! Get your spine and ribs checked if in doubt.

Anti-inflammatory Drugs

Control of inflammation is currently the primary focus in managing asthma, and the most effective drugs are the corticosteroids. These medications interfere with the formation of inflammatory mediators and prevent the activation of inflammatory cells. In addition, they promote relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle. Corticosteroids, produced naturally by the adrenal gland, include hydrocortisone or cortisol, prescribed by a doctor.

During an acute severe asthmatic attack requiring hospitalisation, the patient is usually given, a powerful intravenous drug such as methylprednisolone, and massive doses of 60 to 80 mg are given every several hours in hospital. The patient is then switched to high doses of oral prednisone, which is rapidly tapered over the next 10 days to two weeks. Short-term adverse effects from steroids include increased appetite, weight gain, elevated blood sugar, fluid retention, mood changes, and gastrointestinal upset. Most patients can totally avoid long-term (months or years) use of corticosteroids, which have additional terrible adverse effects and risks. These include a suppressed immune system, adrenal suppression, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, cataracts, skin changes, and peptic ulcers. Clearly with steroidal drugs the long term treatment here can be much worse than the actual disease. The administration of corticosteroids by inhalation has been hailed as the "greatest advance in asthma management" in years. Inhalation corticosteroids are being recommended by many physicians as the first-line maintenance therapy for the adult with daily or frequent asthma symptoms. Their dosage varies from 1 to 5 puffs, two to four times a day, depending on the preparation. Local adverse effects include hoarseness, cough, and oral candidiasis or thrush.. The inhaled steroids should be given at the lowest possible dose, capable of controlling the asthma. In Part 2 we will look at some good recommendations, a treatment plan and discuss Dr. Buteyko's breathing method which can help the asthmatic significantly.

Exercise Induced Asthma

How can exercise induce asthma?

At the same time as healthy exercise can be handled by patients, exercise can often be the cause of an asthma attack.

Symptoms of exercise induced asthma...

Wheezing, coughing and a tightening of the chest are all symptoms of exercise induced asthma. These symptoms will usually be felt after beginning the exercise and will gradually worsen even after exercise stops.

Why does exercise induce asthma?

Even after years of research, the reasons for exercise induced asthma are unclear. However in theory asthma sufferers will breathe faster which does not allow for the nose and airways to add moisture to the air, therefore the air being taken in is dry and cold. This intake of cold, dry air is thought to trigger asthma symptoms.

How do Doctors diagnose exercise induced asthma?

Doctors will often refer to a patient's medical history and perhaps perform peak flow tests in order to determine if a case of exercise induced asthma exists. However in some cases it may be difficult for the Doctor to make a full diagnosis without further tests at a specialised unit.

How to manage your exercise induced asthma...

o Long distance or cross country running can be triggers for asthma attacks due to the intake of cold air without any breaks.

o On the other hand sports such as football, basketball or tennis are less likely to induce an attack if short breaks are taken.

o An excellent sport for asthma sufferers to take part in is swimming, I can speak from experience on this matter. The theory behind this is that warm humid air in the swimming pool is less likely to trigger asthma symptoms. It must be noted however that heavily chlorinated pools can have the opposite effect, as can swimming in cold water.

o Another good exercise for people with breathing problems is yoga, the muscles are relaxed and can help by practising breathing exercises.

Remember - asthma should not stop you from enjoying sports...

Personally I have suffered with asthma since I was very young, however I have always taken part in sports and although I still have breathing problems from time to time, I can control them by remembering a few things...

o Take the correct medication

o Consult your Doctor regularly and ask for advice

o Start the sports slowly and pace yourself to see how much you can do comfortably.

Keep your asthma controlled during exercise by following a few steps...

o Taking regular exercise and taking part in sports can have a positive effect on your breathing problems and reduce exercise induced asthma in the long term.

o Warm up and warm down.

o Try to avoid cold air, this can induce breathing problems. If you take part in sports in cold weather it is a good idea to cover your nose and mouth with a scarf.

Keeping your child's asthma under control at school...

Unless your child suffers from very severe asthma, they should be able to take part in PE and extra curricular sports at school. However remember to inform their teachers of their asthma and keep spare medication at the school in case your child's runs out or loses it. Teachers can also encourage the child to warm up and warm down whilst making sure the child doesn't over exert themselves.

Taking part in competitive sports...

The usual inhaler medications are not banned in competitive sports, however you should register the fact that you have asthma and are taking medication to control it. You should make sure that your friends who you play the sport with are aware of your asthma in case of emergencies.

Taking part in adventure sports...

It is recommended that you consult your Doctor before taking part in adventure sports, if you are cleared to take part then make sure that you inform your instructor of your breathing problems. Also ensure that you keep your medication close to hand. If you need insurance for taking part in adventure sports then you should declare that you have asthma before taking out the policy.

Can I take part in scuba-diving?

Recently the medical profession has recognised that people with controlled symptoms of asthma can take part in scuba-diving. But the pressures involved in scuba-diving such as the exposure to cold air and the possibility of stress and emotion, can induce breathing problems.

If you are planning to take part in scuba-diving whilst on holiday abroad, it is worth checking what the guidelines are on scuba-diving for the country you are travelling to. Some countries do not allow asthma sufferers to take part in scuba-diving.

There are several recommendations made by the British Sub-Aqua Club, for those with mild controlled asthma...

o You have not needed to use your inhaler or shown symptoms of asthma within the last 48 hours.

o You do not have asthma that is triggered by cold, exercise stress or emotion.

Can I take part in mountaineering?

Mountaineering shouldn't be a problem as long as you are physically fit and your asthma is controlled. You should also make sure you plan well for your trip and take more than enough medication.

If your asthma is triggered by air pollution, then the mountain environment is ideal for you. Dust mites are unable to live at the low temperatures of the mountains and therefore the air is cleaner.

However there are several asthma triggers that exist in the mountains such as the cold, dry air and exercise.

The British Mountaineering Council provides good medical advice on high altitude mountaineering.

Can I take part in skiing?

Skiing shares many of the same principles as mentioned above in mountaineering, for example people with well controlled asthma should be able to enjoy skiing without any problems. However as usual if you are concerned it is best to seek medical advice prior to engaging in this activity.

You should seek advice particularly if you are planning to take part in cross country skiing which can be a stronger trigger than downhill skiing.

What about parachute jumping?

As a general rule you can parachute or skydive if...

o Exercise does not trigger your asthma

o You can completely control your asthma

o Cold air does not trigger your asthma

Asthma Treatment

Asthma treatment usually starts by identifying the causes behind the condition. Before we go deeper into the subject of asthma treatment, firstly let me make this clear that asthma is a respiratory system disorder that cannot be cured - it can only be treated. When someone has asthma, his or her airways will tend to get blocked, irritated and there would be excess mucous. And as a result the person would have difficulty in breathing when there is an asthma attack. 'Triggers' are very important in this - these 'Triggers' are what exactly promotes an attack. Asthma 'Triggers' can be dust, pollution, pets, physical labor, cold, and even emotional stress. When there is an excess of these elements, they act as a 'Trigger' to induce an asthma attack. And so before asthma treatment can be undertaken it becomes necessary to first identify the exact 'Trigger' that is responsible for the problem.

Asthma Treatment And The Problem

Asthma treatment will also depend on the extent of the problem. Based on the frequency and duration, the disease can be categorized as...

· Mild intermittent asthma

· Mild persistent asthma

· Moderate persistent asthma

· Severe persistent asthma

Asthma can happen to anyone - young and old and so the disease treatment will also differ. But there are two main aids that are used - inhalers are for adults and asthma spacers are for younger people who need asthma treatment. Asthma patients have breathing problems and for them the pocket sized metered-dose inhalers are essential items. Those who are young however cannot use inhalers many times and for them there are asthma spacers. Many adults also use these spacers - they are the people who cannot hold their breadth for 10 seconds or so.

Nebulizers And Asthma Treatment

Nebulizers are convenient for asthma treatment. Breathing becomes a bit easy because they can administer larger and unbroken doses to the person. The medicine is mixed in a saline solution and the generated stream is constantly passed on as a foggy vapor. The person suffering from asthma receives the entire vapor constantly. In the beginning, the nebulizer relaxes the airway, and then the medication is passed on steadily. Many asthma patients prefer the nebulizer, feeling that they are more efficient in asthma treatment.

Asthma Disease Treatment Using Other Methods

Inhalers, asthma spacers and nebulizers are fine but the medications that are used to solve the breathing problems are very important to give the patient relief. Asthma treatment medications can be classified into the following...

· Anti-inflammatory drugs

· Prolonged bronchodilators

These medications are applicable when the disease is at a somewhat advanced stage and not mild. To control the symptoms and for disease treatment, anti-inflammatory drugs need to be taken. And along with them supplemental medications in the form of prolonged bronchodilators need to be taken.

Long term drugs for asthma treatment includes inhaled corticosteroids, leukotriene modifiers, cromolyn sodium, oral corticosteroids, theophylline and long-acting beta2 agonists.

A lot of research is going on the subject of asthma treatment but as yet a cure is not possible. So in its absence, you need to watch out for the 'Triggers' and try to stay away from them. Inhalers, asthma spacers, nebulizers and medications also offer asthma treatment and relief to the person.

Two Simple Tips To Help You Identify and Treat Infant Asthma

Please take extra caution and observe if your child seems to be continuously coughing, even long after the cold has healed, then it is time to bring your child to a doctor immediately.

This may indicate that he or she may be having first traces of infant asthma which is common in children between 5 to 12 years old. There are particular cases in which this form of asthma affects children that are even younger.

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a serious lung ailment leading to an allergic inflammation of the lungs. There are many reasons of how a child may be a victim of infant asthma.

What Are Asthma Attacks?

Asthma attacks among children are generally triggered by dust mites, pollens, certain type of molds, animal and soft toy furs, open-fire smoke, cigarette smoke, flour kept open in the kitchen, paints, certain chemicals, vigorous workout or excessive movements, sudden room-temperature changes, indigestion of food and many more.

But how do see if your child is having infant asthma? Basically there are a few symptoms for you to identify, and immediately take action by treating it before it gets worse. Infant asthma can be a serious condition if left untreated.

Tip #1 - How To Identify the disease

If you see your child having cough for an abnormal period, especially more than two weeks after the cold have healed; then it is time to act. Seek medical treatment immediately, and besides that clean your house of dust mites or any other reasons that you possibly suspect would be the cause of the asthma.

Besides that, according to research children who are exposed to even one course of antibiotics during their first year of childhood may be more at risk of developing infant asthma. Check for this in the child's medical check-up reports and see if this can be a cause.

If you realize that your child seems to have coughing fits and shortness of breath while playing, or wheezes frequently at night and wakes up with coughing fits, or every time he catches a cold it turns into several days of wheezing or occasional complaints of tight chest and difficulty of breathing, or can't tolerate active sports, or the chest sucks in below the ribs or below the neck when your child inhales, then the child should seek a medical check-up immediately.

Tip #2 - Treating and Curing

An asthma treatment is done to aim one of the types of attack, either to counter inflammation which is the swelling of the lining of the airways and soreness, and blocks the air passage, or bronchi-constriction in which the actual narrowing of the muscles due to the muscles that wrap around the air passage tightens up.

When you suspect your child of having infant asthma, consider watching over these few things.

What to watch for?

First, decide what type of asthma it may be according to the symptoms and types of attack given above.

Second, check how long the symptoms last for at least 6 months to see the symptoms' persistence.

Third, if you think your child has infant asthma visit the doctor to check for wheezing immediately.

Once confirmed, there are several treatments available. Depending on the type of the infant asthma you can take allergy prevention action, or give the child infant asthma medicines such as steroids oral liquid, tablet medicines, steroid inhalers, Cromolyn inhalers, Leukotriene Inhibitors, nebulizers, and also dry powder inhalers.

Even though you may know the two simple tips on how to identify infant asthma, treating and curing it, but all these information will be of no use if no action is being taken.

Having the knowledge is not power, applying the knowledge is true power to free yourself the agony of having asthma again. You should never add to, or alter any component of your current asthma treatment without first consulting your physician.

However, many asthmatics sometimes tend to forget that even though they may know how to identify infant asthma is simply not adequate, they should be be conscious and aware that in order to have an asthma-free lifestyle, a proper and yet effective asthma recovery system is necessary. Even without a proper asthma management system, there will not be much asthma free lifestyle to hope for.

Applying the knowledge of how to identify infact asthma with an effective asthma management system even your little one can use to enjoy asthma-free life once again.

Asthma Attack Relief Using NLP & Hypnosis CD's

Asthma is a chronic situation that affects the respiratory system. During an asthma attack, bronchial tubes, which carry oxygen in and out of the lungs, tend to get narrower and thus decrease the flow of oxygen coming to the lungs. The airways also become inflamed and lined up with mucus. Those symptoms can happen several times a day or week, or much less often. The severity of the attacks also changes.

Various triggers might cause asthma attacks and the breathlessness that accompanies it. Asthma can also cause loss of consciousness and chest pain. It is a very grave disease that can sometimes prove to be deadly: indeed, while 300 million people are affected by asthma around the world, asthma attacks are responsible for the death of an estimated 250,000 people on a yearly basis.

People with asthma also suffer from its side effects in their everyday life. Sleeplessness is a regular experience that can lead to daytime fatigue, and can have a negative impact on one's professional and personal life. The World Health Organization even acknowledges that "reduced activity levels" as well as "school and work absenteeism" are usual side effects of asthma. Exercising will usually be more difficult for people who suffer from asthma, which can for instance be a social isolation factor for children.

Although asthma cannot be definitely cured, doctors have found different ways to relieve and prevent the symptoms, allowing everybody with asthma to stay in shape, exercise and lead a normal life. With the appropriate treatments, there are no reasons why anybody with asthma should not be able to enjoy an active life.

Numerous factors are able to cause an asthma attack. Some are very simple things like the humidity and temperature of the air. Nonetheless, the most usual ones are natural environmental allergens, like pollen, spores, house dust mites or cockroaches as well as pollution from cars, tobacco smoke or chemical compounds, like the ones found in perfumes and perfumed products. Medications like penicillin or aspirin as well as a certain number foods, like milk or peanuts, in the case of food allergies, can also trigger asthma. Asthma attack may also happen after exercising.

Your emotional state can also be an important factor in causing an asthmatic attack. Tension, anxiety and emotional stress can all cause it. A lot of people experiencing an asthmatic attack also make their condition worse by falling prey to state of panic, a totally normal response to the scary experience they have to live through.

In order to better control asthmatic attacks, these triggers should be avoided as much as possible. Allergies also play an important role in the triggering of asthma attacks and allergy treatment can be used as a way to prevent them. There are however various types of asthma treatment. In the short-term, asthma attack treatment will give relief in the case of an asthmatic attack. Asthma attack treatment is able to readily provide asthma relief, however individuals having mild or severe asthma must use a long-term asthma treatment.

You may find several forms of bronchial asthma treatment available out there, however not all of them will work out for you. Bronchial asthma treatment as well as allergy treatment also have many side effects if used regularly and for an extended period of time, especially drugs containing corticosteroids or Beta2-adrenergic receptor agonists, with the latter having cardiac side effects and increasing the risk of respiratory death. Such issues may explain why around half of the people who suffer from asthma use some type of alternative treatment, like natural asthma treatment.

Even though almost no evidence supports the effectiveness of therapies like air ionizers or chiropractic, other types of natural asthma treatments like homeopathy, yoga practices and hypnosis have shown notable results as asthma treatment. Hypnosis, just like yoga or meditation, albeit in a much easier and faster way, provides asthma relief because it is able to help control the psychological side of asthma through relaxation. With hypnosis you will be a lot more relaxed, which will help prevent asthmatic attacks. It will also make you able to better control the fear and panic during an attack, thus greatly reducing the symptoms. Most asthmatics are aware when an attack is imminent, and specific hypnotic techniques exist which enable the asthmatic person to put a stop to an impending attack.

Asthma is a serious respiratory condition, which can prove very handicapping and sometimes even deadly. Drugs will help you with the physiological symptoms and might give prompt relief in case of an attack. Nonetheless those drugs have several negative side effects, especially if used too often. NLP and hypnotherapy will diminish your need for drugs. It is also an effective asthma treatment and asthma attack treatment and will help you prevent the occurrences of asthmatic symptoms.

Celiac Disease & Asthma Appear to Be Linked - Ease Your Breathing Problems by Eating Gluten Free!

The author of this article has written it because their partner is celiac, and they have asthma. Ever woken up in the middle of the night and not been able to breathe? The thing with asthma is that while it is often hereditary, the onset in modern times often occurs earlier than for the preceding generation, again I have personal experience with this. I started experiencing hay-fever and asthma type symptoms about five years before my father did. I only made the celiac (wheat) / asthma connection a few years ago when after eating meat pies and pasties I found an increase in my mucous as well as an accompanying tightened chest.

I have read several blog entries where people with more severe forms of asthma have experienced a much greater asthma attack after ingesting gluten. While this is informative I believe that you the reader are more likely to be persuaded that a link exists by positive medical study results. That is why I have included the following information. The link between celiac disease and asthma has been as difficult to prove as finding the reason celiac disease exists. However some tangible evidence (statistical relationships) have been found.

The majority of articles suggest there is no link between celiac disease and asthma, while anecdotal evidence from celiacs suggests that their asthma increases dramatically after the ingestion of any gluten foods.   For instance, an article by Dr Pradeep Bhandari (Ref 1) says that "Celiac disease and Asthma tend to run in families and the tendency to get these diseases is inherited genetically. However, they are not inter-linked. The tendency to get celiac disease is inherited genetically. It mostly affects people of European descent. It is also more common in families with Diabetes or rheumatoid Arthritis. Something in the environment is necessary to trigger the celiac disease in those who are susceptible. Asthma tends to run in families. A person with a parent who has Asthma is three to six times more likely to develop Asthma than someone who doesn't have a parent with Asthma. But no single gene is responsible for Asthma. Instead, you may inherit a general predisposition to Asthma" Ref 1   However a 2005 study was performed on a population of 86 persons residing in the Maltese Islands in the Mediterranean Sea does suggest some correlation:

MALTESE RESEARCH 2005 (Ref 2: Ellul P, Vassallo M, Montefort S)

"Patients previously diagnosed to have CD (based on serological tests and duodenal biopsy) and attending a medical out-patient clinic answered a questionnaire designed to determine whether they had previously been diagnosed to have asthma or allergic rhinitis." Ref 2   "All 86 patients (age range 16-69 [median 43] years; 65 female) answered the questionnaire about CD and asthma. They constituted 21% of the 409 patients with CD in the Maltese islands included in a register kept for controlling free prescription of gluten-free foods." Ref 2   Of 86 respondents, 24 (27.8%; 21 female) had asthma, including 22 with known asthma and 2 with previously undiagnosed asthma; the frequency of asthma in CD patients was higher than that reported in the general Maltese population (11.1%; pThey conclude that their findings suggest that asthma and allergic rhinitis are more common in CD patients than in the general population in Malta. In patients with atopic diseases, index of suspicion for CD should be high.

The above study clearly shows that asthma symptoms are more prevalent among those people who suffer from celiac disease. It looks like my pie story is gaining weight, all puns intended.

FINNISH study in 2001 (Ref 3: Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology)

This study tested the postulate of whether TH1 and TH2 cells could co-exist. A correlation between these would suggest a correlation between celiac disease and asthma. "Background: Asthma is generally regarded as a disease with strong TH2-type cytokine expression, whereas in autoimmune disorders, such as celiac disease (CD), insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), TH1-type expression is seen. According to the cross-regulatory properties of TH1 and TH2 cells, one would assume that these diseases exist in different patient populations." Ref 3   "Objective: We sought to test the hypothesis that asthma could exist in children with TH1-type diseases, such as CD, IDDM, and RA. Methods: Comparison was made of the cumulative incidence of asthma in children with CD, IDDM, or RA by linking Finnish Medical Birth Register data on the whole 1987 birth cohort (n = 60,254 births) with the data of several national health registers to obtain information on the incidences of these diseases during the first 7 years of life." Ref 3   "Results: The cumulative incidence of asthma in children with CD (24.6%) or RA (10.0%) was significantly higher than in children without CD (3.4%) or RA (3.4%; P T

These data indicate that the TH1 and TH2 diseases can coexist, indicating a common environmental denominator behind the disease processes."

IMPLICATIONS   While these two studies do not show a causal relationship (proof that one disease causes another), they do suggest that there is a strong correlation between the diseases. That means that if you have celiac disease there is a greater likelihood that you will have asthma. The main 'take home' point from this is that for people who are celiac, or gluten intolerant, and have asthma, that the removal of gluten from their diet is likely to decreases the incidence and severity of their asthma.

With global warming extending the hayfever season over the last several years, the last thing I need is gluten intolerance extending difficulty in breathing to all year round. If you are celiac  or gluten intolerant and asthmatic, this article may help you quit gluten.
